With anything in life, you live for the opportunity to leave your mark. The same is true in professional hockey. Tyson Forrester is the embodiment of that in 2023-24. Growing up, Foerster played with the Barrie Minor Midget Colts, recording 20 goals and 41 assists in 34 regular-season games, before being selected by the Barrie Colts in the third round, 55th overall of the 2018 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft.

During his second season, Foerster recorded six points against the Mississauga Steelheads setting off a point streak through 13 straight games which included six consecutive multi-point efforts. National Hockey League scouts noted he showed stark improvement in play and goal scoring, setting career highs in both goals and assists. Foerster described himself as a “shoot-first player with a strong playmaking ability. The Flyers drafted Forrester in the 1st round 23rd overall in the 2020 NHL Draft.

A Pro

Forrester was given his opportunity late last season as the Flyers are transitioning so the young players get maximum time to show what they have. March 9, 2023, against the Carolina Hurricanes Forrester debuted for the Flyers. He had his first assist on March 17 against the Buffalo Sabers, and on the following day, March 18, Foerster scored his first NHL goal against the Hurricanes. On March 26, after scoring three goals over eight games played, Foerster was loaned back to the Flyers’ AHL affiliate Phantoms.

Forrester left his mark on both the coaching staff and the fan base. Entering training camp, he is the most talked about player and the biggest story for the new era of Orange. Both his AHL coach Ian Laperriere and NHL coach John Tortorella rave about his potential at the next level. This is the opportunity that Forrester has been waiting for.

Forrester possesses’ unique skills and is certainly the mold of the 21st-century Hockey player. He’s most comfortable setting up shop at the top of the left face-off circle, taking cross-ice feeds, and one-timing them on the net with power. He sets up his feeds well, scanning the ice for where his target will be, looking at the pass, and threatening to shoot. He’s got one of the best shots in the draft, can see the ice well, and possesses plus defensive instincts.

When you look at the future of the Flyers, it is hard not to envision Tyson Forrester as a part of it. He will enter 2023-24 with that opportunity. The rest as the coaches and management team say is up to the player.
