2024 Phillies Player Spotlight: Nick Castellanos

With the 2024 MLB season bearing down on us. We here at EOP will spotlight a Phillies player every week until the start of the 2024 season. We will highlight their 2023 season, strengths, weaknesses, and 2024 projections. This week we will highlight outfielder, Nick Castellanos.

2023 Season

Outfielder Nick Castellanos enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2023 and continues to be a middle-of-the-lineup menace. His 2022 season saw him hit just 13 home runs in 138 games while his isolated power dipped to just .126, by far a career low. However, he returned in 2023 to slug 29 home runs while adding another 37 doubles and a pair of triples to his ledger, good for a .204 ISO that was in line with his .199 career mark.

Strengths

His walk rates continue to flounder (5.4% in 2023) but the 31-year-old drove in a career-high 106 runs a season ago, the second time in three years he has reached the century mark in RBI. His off-and-on trend over the last four seasons is a concern and his .323 OBA ranked in the league’s 42nd percentile last season. However, he has a top supporting cast that will yield plenty of run-scoring and run-producing opportunities again in 2024.

Weaknesses

He’ll have to improve his approach at the plate. 2023 saw him post the second-highest strikeout rate of his career at 27.6 percent. You can argue it’s the worst rate of his career if you dismiss the 28.5 percent during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. At 24.9 percent, projects his strikeout rate to return closer to his career average of 23.6 percent, so maybe Castellanos will cut down on the swing and miss in his game in 2024.  Castellanos was the most consistent Phillies hitter during the 1st half of the 2023 season. 2nd half and postseason inconsistencies again affected Castellanos in 2023.

2024 Projection

Nick Castellanos quieted the doubters in 2023 and put together a strong second season in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform, resulting in an All-Star appearance and a new career high in runs batted in with 106. Castellanos still has much to prove after signing a five-year, $100 million contract before the 2022 season. Putting together a complete 2024 season will help silence the doubters. In the postseason Nicky bats came in like a lion but went out like a lamb. The Phillies need constant production from him to climb the world championship mountain.
