Archers Dominate All Aspects Of This Game

The Cannons (1-2) faced the Archers (2-1) in Premier Lacrosse League action Saturday afternoon.  

Nick Marrocco was in net for the Cannons facing Adam Ghitelman of the Archers.

The Cannons were able to keep it fairly close in the first half, however, the Archers showed just how tough they were in the second half, outscoring the Cannons 11-3 in the final 24 minutes for the 20-9 victory.

To The Game:

The Cannons got in penalty trouble early, and the Archers made them pay dearly.  Matt Moore opened the scoring on the power play at 1:44, followed by Will Manny converting a Tom Schreiber pass also on the power play at 2:29. 

The Cannons took yet another penalty, and gave up yet another power play goal to the Archers.  Marcus Holman finished off a Matt Moore feed at 9:10.  Finally getting on the scoresheet, the Cannons Ryan Drenner fired a Lyle Thompson feed past Adam Ghitelman at 7:55.

Will Manny increased the Archers lead, scoring off a Tom Schreiber pass at 9:35, but the Cannons answered back when Lyle Thompson converted a Ryan Drenner pass at 10:41.  Stephen Kelly won the draw marching down the field scoring unassisted just 0:07 seconds later, but Marcus Holman got it back for the Archers scoring with just 0:17 seconds left in the quarter.

After one quarter, Archers 5 Cannons 3.

Second Quarter:

The Archers opened the second quarter scoring when Connor DeSimone converted a Will Manny pass at 3:00, but Lyle Thompson fired a beauty of a shot past Adam Ghitelman just 0:25 seconds later.

Will Manny scored off a Tom Schreiber pass at 5:42, but Ryan Tierney answered back for the Cannons at 9:25 off an Asher Nolting pass.

Frank Labetti and Tom Schreiber both scored increasing the Archers lead to 9-5, but Stephen Kelly came right back and scored for the Cannons at 10:34.

At the half, Archers 9 Cannons 6.

Third Quarter:

The Archers kicked it up a notch in the second half, never really letting the Cannons into the game.

Tre Leclaire opened the third quarter scoring converting a Will Manny pass at 2:45, but Asher Nolting scored for the Cannons just 0:11 seconds later. 

Tom Schreiber added two goals to the Archers lead.  Schreiber’s first goal came at 8:09, then again at 8:23, followed by Matt Moore at 8:51 to make the score 13-7. 

Ryan Tierney scored his second of the game at 7:53.  Matt Moore scored answering back for the Archers at 10:13, but Lyle Thompson fired a laser off a Stephen Rehfuss pass just 0:04 seconds later for the Cannons.

Will Manny potted one for the Archers off a Matt Moore pass at 9:59, ending the third quarter scoring.

After three quarters, Archers 15 Cannons 9.

Fourth Quarter:

This quarter was all Archers, shutting out the Cannons 5-0.

Connor DeSimone scored at 2:10, followed by Dominique Alexander scoring at 3:48, to increase the lead to 17-9.

Ryan Aughavin fired a shot from beyond the arc for 2 points, off a Mark McNeill pass at 4:18, followed by Will Manny converting  a Tom Schreiber pass at 4:39.

The Cannons tried to mount an offense, but the Archers were just too strong on this day. 

Final score, Archers 20 Cannons 9.

  • Shots on goal were 30-26 for the Archers
  • Faceoffs were in favor of the Cannons, with Stephen Kelly going 21 for 30.
  • The Archers scored three power play goals in this game.

Gary Groob has been involved with Lacrosse for the majority of his life, whether playing, coaching, or covering the sport for the media.

An avid fan, with a real drive about helping to “grow the game”, Gary became part of podcasts about the game in 2010. Through the podcasts, Mr. Groob was given an opportunity to write about lacrosse, and the rest as they say, is history.

Through many miles (flying and driving) Gary has made inroads with the National Lacrosse League, Major Series Lacrosse League, the Ontario Lacrosse Association, as well as the Arena Lacrosse League, covering the leagues, their teams, and players, working for, and in concert with all of them.

In the year 2020, Mr. Groob was made the media person for the Arena Lacrosse League, voted onto the board of directors of the Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club, as well as being made administrator of the Lacrosse page “Global Lacrosse” with a membership of 9000 members in over 90 Countries. Gary was also made an administrator of Lacrosse History Past Present and Future in 2022.

Mr. Groob co-hosts a weekly Lacrosse show on Spanglish Sports World, and ZingoTV channel 250, as well as writes a weekly lacrosse column for La Portada Canada News (both in print, and online).

Gary also hosts a Lacrosse talk show and podcast for The Edge of Philly Sports Network, seen live Sunday nights at 9pm (ET), and archived on the Edge of Philly YouTube page, as well as Spotify.

Mr. Groob’s other sports interests include Hockey, Football, Boxing, Wrestling, and Baseball, competing competitively in Boxing and Wrestling for many years.
