Around the Sports World in 180 Seconds with Charlie Bowles 2-7-20

Happy Friday Everyone the Sports weekend is upon is ! Before we preview whats ahead lets take a quick look back and what has transpired since we last caught up

NBA: Lots of trades but lets keep it positive and focus on who got better this week
Hawks: The Hawks needed a center. Clint Capella was obscure in a line up that contained a few extremely ball dominant guards. He is only 25 and still has room to improve. He can rebound, block shots and his all around offensive game is much better then people think. He only will make $51MM over the next three seasons or by NBA standards an average salary. Plus looking ahead was there anything better coming available in the next year free agency wise ?
Clippers: The Clippers found a player who has a frame to defend Lebron James . And if they reach the finals possibly Giannis Antetokounmpo. He has had his best year shooting from long range ( just under 44%) . I will assume he will trade minutes for a chance to win a title . The biggest get of this is by getting Morris the Lakers or Bucks did not
Heat: Miami got a proven winner who can defend every position. They also cleared over $20MM off next years cap.  Does not look like they did a lot but this team has chemistry and momentum and they did just enough .
Sixers: I have mixed emotions about this one as I think the Sixers have much deeper problems internally. But there is no denying by acquiring Robinson and Burks while dumping James Ennis they addressed a specific weakness. They are a more complete team then they were yesterday but this team has other issues

In Action Last night : Milwaukee got their revenge from Christmas Day by easily handling the Sixers 112-101 . The Sixers road woes continue as this game was  never as close as the score indicated. Joe Embiid threw up TEN three pointers which leaves many without 15 years coaching in the league scratching their head. So it comes down to this. Either the coach has no idea how to use Embiid or he  does not listen . Either way this is not a good thing for Brett Brown. Embiid looks like he does not care. He has the potential to be one of the best low post players since Hakeem Olajuwon. I am always careful to criticize a profession athlete as they have made obvious sacrifices to get where they are. But with Embiid I think he tosses up 3’s instead of banging in the paint because its easier then doing the hard work. If Joel Embiid ever wants to reach his potential he will get into the box down low and become a force on offense while busting his tail to get back on defense. It seems to me he prefers playing a on a 60 foot court rather then a 94 foot court its just that simple.
Rockets 121-Lakers 111.   Robert Covington had as nice debut for his team hitting two huge three pointers late . Russell Westbrook had 41 points while eclipsing 20,000 points for his career. The  Rockets will be interesting going forward.

NCAA : Was a small schedule with #24 Colorado and #25 Houston both winning #2 Gonzaga pounded Loyola Marymount 85-67 late night

PGA:  Nick Taylor came out closed birdie birdie and fired an opening round 63 to lead the At&T Pebble Beach Pro Am
Our pick Nick Cantlay had a good ay shooting 65 and sits two shots back entering round two today
Coverage 3pm Easten  on the Golf Channel

MLB: hearing rumors of Francisco Lindor to the Yankees while the Phillies sit content with a 3rd place roster

UFC: Seems some UFC veterans are picking Reyes to beat John Jones is this Hype to buy the event or is there something there ? I will stand by Jones wining then moving up to Heavy Weight to fight  Stipe Miocric for the title
NFL: Was a light news day led by another Antiono Brown apology please go away

NHL: The Lightning win again while the Flyers were smoked by New Jersey 5-0

Looking ahead :
NCAA: Hope for upsets as there are only a few games where ranked teams meet this weekend:
Tonight  #9 Maryland faces #20 Illinois
Tomorrow #16 LSU visits Auburn  while #12 Seton Hall visits Villanova   in a non ranked attraction North Carolina and Duke meet again where records as they say go out the window

PGA : At&T continues on one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate anywhere in the world

NBA : The grind continues with players getting set with their new teams. If you want a good game to watch Sunday evening the Jazz  visit the Rockets at 7PM

We are entering the dog days of winter . NBA All star week , pitchers and catchers report. Bright side we are only a few weeks from the conference tournaments in the NCAA
Enjoy the Sports Day !
