Austin Staats Scores Sock Trick In Win Over Mammoth

Austin Staats scored a sock trick as the San Diego Seals cruised to a 16-7 home win over the Colorado Mammoth on Sunday night.

Staats would end the game with nine points. Curtis Dickson led the way with three goals and seven assists for 10 points for the Seals. Their big guns came to play as Wes Berg and Dane Dobbie added seven points each.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s offense sputtered. The Seals’ defense locked down Eli McLaughlin as he was only able to pick up three assists and Connor Robinson also failed to find the back of the net. It was a rough night for Dillon Ward as he allowed 13 goals on 48 shots before he was quietly pulled between the third and fourth quarter.

It was also a physical affair as Paul Dawson picked up 11 penalty minutes for the Mammoth. San Diego had five power play opportunities and capitalized on three of them.

Colorado Keeps It Close Early

The Mammoth got off to a strong start. Connor Kelly opened the scoring 57 seconds into the game. Zed Williams followed that up with 6:47 left on the clock to make it 2-0 for the Mammoth. Kelly rounded out the three-goal run 1:27 later on the power play.

San Diego worked quickly to tie up the game, scoring three goals in just over two minutes. Dobbie scored with 2:33 left followed by Staats with 1:47 on the clock.

Staats scored with 15 seconds left in the quarter as the Sealed tied it up 3-3 after the first quarter.

Dylan Kinnear put the Mammoth up 5-4 at 3:07 of the second quarter. But Colorado’s offense would go silent after that.

The Seals finished off the first half with a four-goal run. Staats would score twice for his third and fourth goals of the game. On the power play, Dickson found the back of the net with 7:27 in the second to make it 7-5. Goal number five came to Staats with six seconds left before the half as the Seals led 8-5 at the break.

All San Diego In The Third

The game became out of reach in the third quarter as Chris Origlieri stopped all shots he faced in a 5-0 run for the Seals.

Dobbie opened the scoring on the power play 4:34 into the third quarter and added another with 5:49 on the clock. Staats scored his sock-trick goal with 4:36 left. Right off the faceoff, Dickson took the ball down and scored seven seconds later as the Seals took a 12-5 lead.

Dickson scored his hat trick goal with nine seconds left in the quarter as San Diego led 13-5 heading into the final frame.

Seals Cruise To Victory

Berg scored twice to open the fourth quarter to put San Diego up by 10 and put this game all but out of reach.

Tyson Gibson scored to end Colorado’s scoring drought after going 37:17 with a goal. Colorado started to push back late as Kelly scored his hat trick marker with 4:18 left to play.

Dobbie rounded out the scoring with 3:38 on the clock to make the final 16-7.
