Burrards Pull Off Major Upset Over Shamrocks

In a major upset, the Maple Ridge Burrards downed the Victoria Shamrocks 7-4 on Sunday night in WLA action.

After going 1-17 last season, the Burrards are now 2-0 and leading the WLA standings.

Brandon Humphrey had a huge game for the Burrards, stopping 47 shots as Victoria outshot Maple Ridge 51-34. On the other end of the floor, Cam Dunkerley stopped 32 shots in the loss.

Victoria struggled five-on-five in this game. Two goals came on the power play and one with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker. The Shamrocks’ lone even-strength goal came with 1:03 left in the game.

Quiet First Period

The first period saw little offense as the game was tied 1-1 at the first buzzer.

The hero for Victoria in their season opener Cole Pickup opened the scoring at 6:04 on the power play.

At 9:08, Rhys Blake scored on a solo effort for the Burrards to tie up the game.

Burrards Take The Lead

Maple Ridge took the lead in the second period, opening with a two-goal run.

Dylan McIntosh put the Burrards up 2-1 at 4:46 into the second frame. The very next possession, 15 seconds later, Mitch Mcdole found the back of the net to make it 3-1.

The Shamrocks would get back within one off a goal from Nick Preston with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker at 5:49.

On the power play, Pickup scored at 11:12 to knot the game up 3-3.

Blake scored his second of the game, unassisted, shorthanded as Maple Ridge held a 4-3 lead heading into the third.

Maple Ridge Completes Major Upset

Drew Andre, unassisted, opened the third period scoring at 4:23 as the Burrards extended their lead 5-3.

Just under four minutes later, Isaac Ngyou would give Maple Ridge a 6-3 advantage. The Burrards kept the pressure on as McIntosh scored at 9:02 to round out a four-goal run for the Burrards.

Thomas Vaesen found the back of the net for Victoria with 1:03 left in the game, but the Burrards pulled off the major upset 7-4.
