Call me crazy but could the Eagles draft both Devin Lloyd AND Nakobe Dean? I know, some of you probably want me to check myself into a psych ward after reading that first sentence. And a part of me agrees with you. However, let’s dive in and take a look.
What is the one position we Eagles fans have been shouting from the rooftops on draft day 1 to upgrade? Correct, Linebacker. TJ Edwards is a nice player and starting to come into his own. But Howie has a great opportunity to really solidify the position this coming draft. Alex Singleton will probably move on. Davion Taylor can’t seem to stay on the field.
Devin Lloyd and Nakobe Dean are looked at as 1a and 1b when it comes to the top of the Linebackers class coming out of college and into ‘the League’. Pairing those two up with TJ Edwards would put the NFL on notice that the Eagles’ defense is for real. What’s the saying “Defense wins championships”? With a group of aging veterans, the window to win now is becoming smaller and smaller.

A lot of options in Round 1
With 3 picks in the first round this upcoming draft Howie could go many ways. However, I feel we are all in agreement, outside of a trade for a quarterback, defense is what is most important to not only upgrade but get younger at. The Birds are already linked up in rumors of having an interest in a Defensive End and Safety (we will go more in-depth with that in my next article) in free agency coming up in about a week. So could they say ‘buck the system’ and surprise everyone to not only draft one but two Linebackers in the first? It’s a long shot for sure but I wouldn’t be TOTALLY surprised.
With top prospect Kyle Hamilton and Aidan Hutchinson most likely off the board when the Eagles pick mid-way through the first round. Why not draft the top guys at another position of need. All sounds logical. Unfortunately, as we have seen in the past that is not how Howie works.
I personally think the Eagles should absolutely consider this. Can you imagine a Day 1 haul of Tyler Linderbaum, Devin Lloyd, and Nakobe Dean? Strengthen the defense and grab a stub Offensive Lineman. Little chance that it happens but a guy can dream, right?
