Flyers Ground Jets

Carter Hart made 40 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Flyers blanked the Jets 4-0 on Saturday night.  The Flyers now find themselves 21-21-9 with 51 points as they head into their NHL-mandated break and all-star break—six points out of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Action

Noah Cates, Kieffer Bellows, Owen Tippett, and Tony DeAngelo scored for the Flyers. The development of the young players continues. But more important than that is the development of the system that head coach John Tortorella has brought is beginning to take root. The Flyers are now 10-4-2 since their Christmas break and 7-1-1 in its last nine road games.

For Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 shots for Winnipeg before being relieved by David Rittich. Rittich made three saves. DeAngelo scored on a set-up from Scott Laughton at 6:48 of the third period, the goal that chased Hellebuyck from the net. The Jets have lost three straight to drop to 31-19-1, including their last two games at home.

The wins and losses are secondary for this team. What is essential is the growth and development of the young players and the system.  The Flyers are a team with heart, character, and fire. These qualities were nonexistent on the Flyers teams of years past. That continues to be the ultimate measuring stick for this team.
