Cavan Sullivan Inks Richest MLS Homegrown Deal with the Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union and Major League Soccer announced that Cavan Sullivan, 14, has signed the richest MLS homegrown deal in history. The deal will have Cavan Sullivan join his bigger brother and fellow homegrown Quinn Sullivan to the club through 2028. Cavan will head to Europe to play with juggernaut club Manchester City once he turns 18.

Rare and Extraordinary Talent

Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner spoke highly of Cavan and of his play. “Cavan is undeniably a rare and extraordinary talent. At just 14 years old, his natural skill and vision are far beyond his years,” Tanner said in a release after the signing.

Cavan, at such a young age, has a superior soccer IQ. His ability to read plays before they happen, find the back of the net, and get his teammates involved are just a few things that make Cavan so special. He was named to the 2023 Generation Adidas Cup Best XI for the Philadelphia Union U-15s at just the age of 13. Also, in 2023, he won the golden ball for being the best player at the 2023 CONCACAF U-15 Championship, while representing Team USA. Then, at this year’s 2024 Generation Adidas Cup, Cavan played a huge part in the club repeating as champs. In March earlier this year, Sullivan debuted in the MLS NEXT PRO league with the Union 2 and got the game-winning assist that had the media and fans buzzing.

Young Talent

At just the young age of 14, Sullivan is already showing signs of maturity, saying, “Despite the hype and all the noise as of right now, I’m still going to work and work and work and prove myself. I’m gonna go work for the fans and for the city”. Cavan will wear number 6 for Philadelphia and look to be the youngest player in all of North America major sports to debut. that is if he can get on the field before July 29th. Union manager Jim Curtin stated, “We’re not afraid to put Cavan on the field when he’s ready. He’ll get on the field on merit. I’ll just say it publicly: that day is a lot closer than people realize.”

The Philadelphia Union’s developmental and training staff are some of the best in MLS, if not the best. Names like Jack McGlynn, Nathan Harriel, older brother Quinn, and another set of brothers Paxten and Brenden Aaronson to name a few. You can now add Cavan, to the names and young talent that this staff has helped prepare for at the next level. Look for these names to be a part of Team USA this summer and in the World Cup in 2026.

The Union

The Philadelphia Union sits at 8th place in the east with a game against Orlando FC coming up at home this Saturday. I know the Philly fan base is excited about this signing, and I can’t wait for Cavan to make his debut with the club, hopefully sometime in the near future.
