Eagles Salary Cap Updated. Howie has been busy. Working hard to get the cap number to a positive the only way he knows how. Restructuring contracts. One would say that is the exact reason why the Eagles are in this salary cap situation. What is that old saying, ‘sometimes you have to rob Peter to pay Paul‘? Well, that is every offseason for the midnight green and I’m sure it will continue on as long as Howie is in the front office.
CB Darius Slay, C Jason Kelce, LG Isaac Seumalo, DT Javon Hargrave, and most recently as of a couple of hours ago, RG Brandon Brooks have all restructured their contracts. Getting the Eagles cap number down to a projected $10.4 million still in the red. Much better than the negative $70 million the Eagles saw themselves just weeks ago.
The Eagles need to get under the cap before the beginning of the new league year. Which happens to be in 5 days. We should expect some news each day leading up to March 15th.
Howie still has a handful of moves he can make before having to become creative to free up some money. Brandon Graham and Lane Johnson continue to be in discussions on their contracts being restructured saving up to a total of 16 million in cap relief. Derek Barnett could be released with a $0 dead cap hit saving $10 million. A Fletcher Cox contract restructure could add another $11 million. And of course, we can’t forget the only matter of time trade of Zach Ertz. Which saves another $5 million.
The team needs about $10 million available to sign their 2021 draft picks. Outside of that, I don’t expect a spending spree in free agency. Nonetheless, I do expect 1 or 2 names to be adding to the team at a reasonable price. The next couple of days for sure are gonna be interesting.
