Flyers Prospect Breakdown: Rhett Gardner, C, Leigh Valley Phantoms, AHL

The Player

Has a good size and a strong awareness of the ice. Can play either center or wing. Is valuable in penalty-killing situations and rather responsible on the ice. Is not much of a point producer (even at lower levels), so he is not a good candidate to play as a top-six forward at the National Hockey League level.

During the 2019-20 campaign, he produced 18 points (6-12=18) in 27 games on home ice and earned a +5 rating in those games. Gardner received his first NHL promotion on Oct. 4, 2019, and played eight games for Dallas before returning to Texas.

His first professional goal proved to be the game-winning tally against Iowa on Mar. 29, 2019. In college, he was ranked third on North Dakota’s roster with eight goals during his Senior season and was fourth as a freshman with 11 goals.

As a Junior and Senior, represented his alma mater as an alternate captain and was named NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year in 2017-2018, and helped the University of North Dakota capture the 2016 NCAA National Championship.

Projection

Big, strong defensive forward with a little upside.
