Yes, indeed, it was the day we all have been waiting for. The Debut of Phillies top pitching prospect, Spencer Howard. I can sum up the performance in two words, IT SUCKED! Ok, I’m kidding. The outing was good, not great. Ok, maybe I’m being generous. In all honesty, it was not the result we were expecting. However, what I took away from it was that Howard has the stuff to make it in the “bigs”. I still have full confidence that he will be a major contributor to this starting rotation for the rest of this season (given the chance) and for many seasons to come.
On top of all that, for the second time in as many games in the same day. The Phillies bats did not show up. Howards finished with 7 Hits & 1 Walk with an ERA of 4 runs in 4.2 Innings pitched. Regardless, how is a pitcher supposed to be successful with 0 runs support? A pitcher making his debut or a 10-year seasoned veteran. No one player can win alone. Pitchers need to depend on the 8 other position players to pick them up if they get into a bit of a pickle. This team isn’t doing that right now.
The Phillies went on to lose to the Braves, 8-0. They will try to pick up the pieces and salvage a series split with a win tomorrow. Aaron Nola takes the mound at 6:05 pm. Let’s hope Aaron can get the type of support he needs.
As for Spencer Howard, this kid has got it. Although, his debut didn’t go as planned. He absolutely showed flashes of greatness. I look forward to watching this gentleman pitch for years to comes.
