JAHAN DOTSON | PENN STATE WIDE RECEIVER

Penn State has had a rush of wide receivers in the NFL Draft over the last 5 years. In 2017, Chris Godwin was drafted in the 3rd Round by the Buccaneers. 2018 saw DaeSean Hamilton taken in the 4th Round by the Broncos. In 2020 KJ Hamler was also picked by the Broncos in the 2nd Round. That brings us to the Class of 2022 and Jahan Dotson. Dotson is considered the best of the group mentioned above with late 1st Round to early 2nd Round draft likelihood. Jahan does not possess great size at just 5’11’, 184 lbs but does possess great speed. Dotson runs a 4.43, with great quickness and agility.

Dotson was a statistic machine at Penn State in his final two seasons. In 2020 he caught 52 balls in 9 games for 884 yards and 8 TDs. He topped that in all areas in 2021 catching 91 balls in 12 games for 1182 yards and 12 TDs. He also rushed for another score.

As can see in the expert analysis below. There are some concerns with Dotson’s size and strength against NFL man coverage. What’s not in question is his speed and athleticism which could make him a draft steal in the 25-40 draft pick range.

NFL Analyst of Jahan Dotson

According to Analysis Lance Zierlein, Jahan Dotson is a finesse wideout with good speed. He has great athleticism who is fully operational on all three levels of the field. Dotson’s passing scheme was well-designed and allowed for clear access to space for most of the season. His route-running is smooth but features speed changes and his in-air athleticism and ball skills look effortless. His confidence and competitiveness are just average against physical coverage and he’s likely to see a lot more press looks like a pro. Dotson has inside/outside starting talent but a lack of physicality could prevent him from taking over games at the same rate we saw at Penn State.

Draft Summary

Dotson’s athletic ability and impressive season at Penn State have NFL scouts paying attention and even thinking he could become the next Tyreek Hill. He is the draft’s second-best deep threat, after Jameson Williams, and is a top-level prospect that could explode at the next level. It’s likely Dotson will be taken in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft – it’s just unlucky for him this is such a loaded class as any other year he would likely be picked in the top half.
