The Las Vegas Desert Dogs traveled to Dickies Arena on Sunday to face the Panther City Lacrosse Club in Week 2 action. Las Vegas was coming off a heartbreaking loss to Albany in their home opener last week. Furthermore, the Desert Dogs were unable to beat Panther City in three meetings last year. With 1:43 left in the game, it looked like they would fall to 0-4. But a last-second shot trickled in to tie the score, and Zack Greer’s goal in overtime lifted Las Vegas to an 11-10 win, their first ever over Panther City. Both teams are now 1-1 on the year. The Desert Dogs host Saskatchewan next week, while Panther City hosts Toronto in Week 4.

Las Vegas down two at the half

Callum Crawford (3g, 3a) opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game for Panther City. Mathieu Gautier (2:10) then scored a power play goal to make it 2-0. Las Vegas equalized with goals from Connor Kirst (10:33) and Jonathan Gagliardi (13:23). Just 34 seconds later, Jason Knox scored his first NLL goal for Panther City, only for Rob Hellyer (3g, 2a; 14:15) to level the game at 3-3 before the end of the first quarter. Casey Jackson (2g, 1a; 0:48) briefly gave Las Vegas the lead in the second quarter. PCLC followed with a three-goal run to take the lead into halftime. Crawford’s second (4:18), Jonathan Donville (2g, 5a; 7:18), and Crawford’s hat trick goal (14:52) put Panther City up 6-4.

Las Vegas gets first win against PCLC

Hellyer started the second half with back-to-back goals (3:16; 4:35) to tie the game at 6-6. Donville’s second (11:39) and a marker from Ryan Sheridan (14:06), were countered by top draft pick Dylan Watson’s first career goal (12:28). After three quarters, Las Vegas trailed 8-7. Phil Caputo extended the PCLC lead to two with a power play goal at 8:39. The Desert Dogs clawed their way back with Jack Hannah scoring at 11:01, followed by a power play goal from Jackson (11:59) to make it 9-9.

Will Malcom (1g, 3a) had what appeared to be the game-wining goal at 13:17. However, on the next to last shift, goaltender Nick Damude unsuccessfully tried to clear the ball from the PCLC end of the floor. Las Vegas came up with the loose ball, and Sean Westley’s desperation shot with just a few seconds left on the game clock managed to sneak by Damude and trickle into the net to tie the game at 9-9 and force overtime. Seizing on that momentum and a pair of inefficient possessions by Panther City in overtime, Zack Greer scored the game-winning goal at 2:55 of overtime, giving Las Vegas their first ever victory over Panther City.
