Round robin game 2 in the Toronto bubble with Philadelphia Flyers take on the Washington Capitals. The big story is Scott Laughton and his working line. Laughton leads the Flyers to victory in today’s showdown. Brian Elliot sits in goal for the Fly-Guys. Flyers have a 2-0-1 record during the season against the Caps. Elliot is 2 and 0 against Washington.
1st Period
It doesn’t take long for these two aggressive teams to get going. Plenty of big hits between both teams. In less than 4 minutes a pair of roughing calls from Michal Kempny and Sean Couturier. 17 hits from the Caps and 7 from Philly.
The offense gets kick-started from the orange and black with a giveaway from former Flyer, Radko Gudas, and pair of pretty assists to Scott Laughton for a 1-0 lead. That is a goal per game in this round-robin tournament for Laughton. Assists come from Travis Konecny and Kevin Hayes. Both team’s penalty kill was on point. The period ends 1-0 Philly.
2nd Period
The second period was riddled with penalties on both sides. It took many power plays and about 12 minutes before anyone could capitalize. Kevin Hayes puts on a stickhandling clinic working his way around multiple Washington skaters. Finally passes to Travis Sanheim when he flips the puck pass by Brandon Holtby. Flyers lead extends 2-0 over the Capitals. (Somehow Hayes does NOT get an assist)
3rd Period
The Flyers defense continues to wreak havoc on Washington. They are the best scoring team in the third period during the regular season but that means nothing to Philly.
Scott Laughton adds another goal making 3-0 Flyers. Assists coming from Konecny and Hayes. Problem was that only 12 seconds later Travis Boyd finally put the Caps on the board. 3-1 Flyers still lead. Flyers hang on to the lead for the victory.
Test
Laughton leads the Flyers to victory and continues to shine in this postseason. Brian Elliot puts on a hell of a show making him one of the best backup goalies in the NHL (In my eyes). The penalty kill remains perfect in the last 2 games. Bring on Tampa Bay this Saturday. They will see who will get first place in the east.
FUN FACT: Ovechkin scoreless in all Flyers matchups this season to date.
