The Minto Cup got underway on Sunday at the Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton, Alberta, to crown a national Junior A champion.
It was a rough start for the Alberta squads as they fell into the loss column. Meanwhile, the Burlington Blaze and the Coquitlam Adanacs will bring undefeated records into day two.

Coquitlam 14 Calgary 1
The BC champs came out strong to open the tournament as they defeated the Calgary Mountaineers 14-1.
Stuart Phillips had five goals and six assists for 11 points for the Coquitlam Adanacs while Jaxon Dillon had two goals and five assists.
Calgary’s lone goal came from Jeremy Wudrick.
Burlington 11 Edmonton 7
A big second period would give the Burlington Blaze an 11-7 win over the host Edmonton Miners in Sunday night’s second game.
Burlington was leading 2-1 after the first period until they outscored the Miners 5-3 in the second.
Brooks English had four goals for Burlington, while Deacan Knott stopped 50 of 57 shots in the win. For Edmonton, Jack Royer was two goals and an assist and Mathieu Gautier had a pair of goals for the Miners.
Upcoming Games
Monday night the Calgary Mountaineers will look to rebound when they face the Burlington Blaze. In the late game, the Edmonton Miners will face the Coquitlam Adanacs as the Minto Cup continues into Day 2.
