The Calgary Mountaineers swept a three-game weekend set with the Saskatchewan SWAT in Saskatoon, outscoring their opponents 47-10 in Junior A Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League action.
The Mounties opened the series on Saturday night and took away a 19-1 win over their Saskatchewan counterparts. Calgary held a 16-0 lead heading into the third period before Jeremy Wudrick took a feed from Mathew Wist to finally get on the board.
Also to take into consideration, the SWAT were playing six AP players and the Mounties only had one in the lineup.
Things got a little rough in the second period. At the 7:29 mark, the SWAT’s Nathan Wagstaff and the Mounties’ Skylar Running Rabbit dropped the glove. Two minutes later Aiden Doleman of the SWAT was called for boarding which caused another melee that saw Doleman and Carter Linklatter for the Mounties tossed from the game for fighting.
Kyle Playsted led the way for the Mounties with three goals and five assists. Hat tricks also came from Lukas Olsson, Brydon Robichaud, Mattias Flammenspeck and Nathan Lam.
Mounties 19 SWAT 4
The Mounties once again got off to a quick start on Saturday in Saskatoon, getting up 8-0 after the first period. Saskatchewan was able to get themselves back with five early in the second period to make it 8-5 with a pair of goals from Dagan Carlson and one from Wagstaff.
The Mounties once again got a huge effort out of Playsted. He put up five goals and four assists. Robichaud tallied 11 points with three goals and eight assists for Calgary.
Again, tempers flared in this one as both teams combined for 127 penalty minutes including a fight between Liam Nolin for Saskatchewan and Ismael (Gord) Uddin in the second period. Disciplinary action could be coming as well as the Mounties’ Cook received a game misconduct for abuse of an official.
Mounties 9 SWAT 5
A much tamer game took place on Sunday in Saskatoon to wrap up the weekend set between these two teams.
The Mounties held a 5-1 lead after the first period. Davis Dame got the Mounties on the board first, 19 seconds into the game. Flammenspeck added a pair and Jackson Foord finished off a four-goal run to make it 4-0.
Wist would get the SWAT on the board at 10:41. However, Robichaud scored with 59 seconds left in the period to make it 5-1.
The SWAT was able to outscore the Mounties 3-2 in the second period to narrow the score to 7-4. Wist, Wudrick and Tyler Merilees had power play markers for the SWAT. Scoring for the Mounties was Riley Isaacs and Jacob Berg.
The Mounties were able to put the game away in the third with goals from Olsson and Isaacs to seal the weekend set. Wudrick had the lone third-period goal for the SWAT.
In other action
The St. Albert Miners and Okotoks Raiders squared off in a pair of games over the weekend and split it one game a piece.
On Saturday, the Raiders held on for a 14-10 win over the Miners. However, the Miners salvaged the weekend set with a 9-5 win on Sunday.
The Mounties lead in the standing with a record of 6-1. The Raiders hold a 3-3 record, while the Miners are 3-2. The SWAT sit in fourth with a 1-7 record.
