Philadelphia Eagles Draft Clemson… Running Back Will Shipley

The Philadelphia Eagles chose a Clemson star with the 127th pick in the fourth round (just not the one everyone hoped for). Runningback Will Shipley was the fourth-round pick. Will Shipley is an excellent screenback but has many drops and fumbles. He is also very good in short yardage and as a kick returner. He had 2,748 yards and 31 rushing touchdowns at Clemson (5.2 YPC). The Eagles love their speedy and/or versatile backs in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft.

Will Shipley 40 time

Shipley put together one of the fastest times of a running back in the 40-yard dash, sprinting for a finish of 4.39 seconds. His unofficial time was 4.44 before officially posting at just under 4.40 seconds.

The Clemson running back did not participate in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, so his name is not in those statistics. Instead, he competed in the event at Clemson’s Pro Day.

Will Shipley’s Scouting Report

Shipley does not figure to be a workhorse RB, at least not right away. However, he very well could carve out a role as a productive complementary back in the NFL.

The 5-11, 200-pound back’s speed stands out the most, proven by his 40-yard dash time. Due to his speed in the open field, he can be a solid option in the passing game or a change-of-pace option out of the backfield. His ability to impact both in the running and passing games adds value.

Shipley also was used on kickoff returns. With the new kickoff rules set to be implemented in the NFL, quick and agile returners may be more prevalent than before.

Will Shipley Stats

Shipley had a breakout season in 2022, finishing with 1,182 yards and 15 scores on the ground. His numbers took a bit of a dip in 2023, but he still finished with 827 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

In addition to using his legs, Shipley was often featured in the passing game at Clemson. He finished with at least 30 catches in his last two seasons with the Tigers.
