On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Union welcomed Charlotte FC to town. Philadelphia came in looking to extend their 7-game unbeaten streak. The boys in blue had an impressive showing on Memorial Day weekend with a 4-0 victory over NYCFC on the road. The Union kept that momentum going into this matchup on a short week. Charlotte also came into this matchup on a good streak, winning 4 out of the last 5 games. Unfortunately for them, Philadelphia extends their unbeaten streak to 8 games.

Out of the Gate
Right off the bat, Philadelphia had a great chance to take an early lead. Just 31 seconds into the game when a great run and pass by Leon Flach found Carranza in the box for a strike that went off the crossbar. The Philadelphia offense didn’t get another quality chance until the 42nd minute. A blast from outside the box by Brujo Martinez went just high over the bar. After strong defensive halves by both teams, the first 45 minutes of play ended all tied up at 0-0
The Union would draw first blood when a blast by Brujo deflected wide to an open Kai Wagner, who sent a beautiful cross pass in that found our number 10 Daniel Gazdag at the back post for a header that took a bounce off Charlotte FC goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina and into the back of the net. The goal was credited as an OG by the keeper and gave the Union a 1-0 lead in the 70th minute of the contest.

Make It 8
That’s all Philly would need, and for the final 20 minutes, the Union defense continued its dominance, not giving Charlotte any real chance at tying it up and ultimately giving Philadelphia the 1-0 victory. The 1-0 win Wednesday night gives the boys in blue 4 clean sheets this month out of 6 games. Philadelphia extends their unbeaten streak to 8 games and looks to make it 9 Saturday against CF Montréal.
