Philadelphia Looked to Sweep the Season Series

The Philadelphia Union took on Charlotte FC in a rematch from earlier in the season. The Union defeated FC back in May at Subaru Park in a 1-0 victory. An OG from Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina decided that game after a header from Daniel Gazdag hit off the post and deflected into the back of the net. Philadelphia looked to sweep the season series Wednesday night in Charlotte.

Right off the bat, the Union got a great opportunity to take a lead when a corner in the 4th minute of the game found Chris Donovan, whose header went off the post.

On a short week, Head Coach Jim Curtin gave Chris Donovan and New Arrival Tai Baribo the nod up top in place of the usual cast of Mikael Uhre and Julian Carranza, who both subbed on for the two in the second half.

To the Action…

The first half saw both teams have good chances to put one on the board, but neither could find the back of the net. After 45 minutes of play, the game stood scoreless at 0-0.

That would quickly change when a turnover by Philly in the defensive end led to a broken play in front of the net that fell right to Justin Meram, who didn’t miss his chance to give his team the 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the second half. Six minutes later, Charlotte would double their lead and put the game nearly out of reach. A cross by Brandt Bronico found Karol Swiderski at the near post for a beautiful header that left Andre Blake helpless, putting FC up 2-0 with only 29 minutes to play.

The Union wouldn’t go out without a fight, and in the 70th minute, substitute Chris Sullivan received a great pass by Carranza in the box and didn’t let it go to waste with a beautiful finish to cut the lead in half with 20 minutes remaining.

In the End…

The Union would catch the break they were looking for in extra time when Olivier Mbaizo was taken down inside the box and awarded a PK. Mr. Automatic Daniel Gazdag took care of the rest, easily sending the keeper the opposite way and tying the game at two. That would be enough for the Philadelphia Union to sneak out of Charlotte with a point after a disappointing outing for most of the game.
