Philadelphia Union in the Top 5 for Matchday 9 Power Rankings

The MLS season has kicked into full gear! After nine matchdays, some surprising and familiar teams have made the list. Where will teams like reigning champs Columbus Crew, MLS cup favorites Inter Miami, an unbeaten Philadelphia Union team, and West Coast powerhouse LA Galaxy find themselves in this week’s MLS top 10 power rankings? The Philadelphia Union is in the Top 5 for Matchday 9 power rankings.

10. Colorado Rapids

The Rapids made easy work of San Jose, beating them 3-0. Rafael Navarro absolutely shined in this one, recording two goals and assisting on the other goal. Colorado is red hot right now, with three wins and a draw in their last four matches. They look to keep it going this week as they welcome FC Dallas to Colorado.

9. FC Cincinnati

In what was expected to be a tough road match, FC Cincinnati fell to CF Montreal in this one, 2-1. The Canadian club’s much-anticipated home opener was not exactly played in great weather, and Cincy never looked comfortable in the windy, cold conditions. With back-to-back losses, is it time to start getting worried about their form? Not quite yet. Cincy is still one of the top teams across the MLS and needs to bounce back this week away at Atlanta United FC.

8. Real Salt Lake

One of the most consistent teams across MLS to start the season, Real Salt Lake was able to come away with a draw against reigning MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew, 0-0 that saw 32 fouls called between the teams. Coming away unbeaten 4 times in a row now, this club is flying high in the West standings in 4th place. Next, they visit the windy city to go up against Chicago Fire FC.

7. Vancouver Whitecaps

After entering this week atop the west standings, Vancouver came crashing down after their blazing start to the MLS campaign. The Whitecaps gave up a goal just minutes after leveling things at 1-1. Then gave up another goal late to fall 3-1 to the LA Galaxy. Still, in 2nd place in the west, Sartini’s has this club among one of the most impressive in 2024 so far as they take a trip to Seattle and take on the Sounders in a late-night matchup.

6. Houston Dynamo

Sebastian Kowalczyk recorded his first career MLS goal, which proved to be the game-winner this past week away in Minnesota. The Dynamo sit in 3rd in the West with 4 wins in their last 5 matches. Even more impressive, Dynamo has played without key players such as Hector Herrera, Nelson Quinones, Franco Escobar, and Carlos Ferreira. Houston invites Austin FC this week for an all-Texas showdown.

5. Columbus Crew

The Crew earned a 0-0 draw vs a talented Real Salt Lake team. This after playing over 120 minutes against Tigres in Mexico during the CCC Quarterfinals. The Crew are playing like they want to repeat as MLS Cup champions. Playing without Cucho Hernandez, Christian Ramirez, and backup keeper Nicholas Hagen had to come on and save 5 shots, but it was nothing this team could not overcome. They are still among the best in MLS and will be at home vs Portland this week.

4. Philadelphia Union

The Union found themselves down 2 goals early in the 2nd half but proved why they are the only unbeaten team remaining in the MLS. Jim Curtin called upon super-sub Mikael Uhre to change things for the Union. Quick goals by Uhre and Wagner leveled things at 2-2. After a questionable offside call that took a potential game-winner off the board, this one would end in a 2-2 draw. Union get some much-needed rest this week and can enjoy the bye to tend to key injured players like star goalkeeper Andre Blake.

3. New York Red Bulls

The NY Red Bulls are the most shockingly good team so far. Already with 15 points this season after just recording 43 points all last season, NY played the Chicago Fire to a 0-0 draw. Red Bulls would play with only 10 players for much of this match, so a draw would not be too shabby. Sitting in 2nd place in the east, the Red Bulls travel to LAFC for a battle of West Coast vs East Coast.

2. Inter Miami

The “GOAT”, Lionel Messi returned from a hamstring injury and did not disappoint in front of more than 70k fans at Arrowhead Stadium to battle it out with Sporting KC.  The Argentine star stunned fans after he let one rip from 25 yards out that found the back of the net. Messi also assisted to take three points on the road in a 3-2 thriller. A great response from Inter Miami after their lackluster performance and exit in CCC vs Monterey. Messi and company will look to get 3 points at home vs Nashville to remain in 1st place in the east.

1. Los Angeles Galaxy

The Galaxy are back to being one of MLS’ powerhouse teams. One of the MLS’ most storied franchises looked like they did in 2011, 2012, and 2014, when they were crowned MLS Cup Champions. Riqui Puig and Joseph Paintsil both came up big combining for two late goals over, then 1st place in west, Vancouver Whitecaps in a western conference showdown. LA is sitting in 1st place entering this week’s battle against last-place San Jose at home.
