Phillies Crush Texas Rangers

The Philadelphia Phillies crushed the defending World Series Champion Texas Rangers. The Phillies just finished a 3 game home sweep of the Washington Nationals. They also just did the same to the Texas Rangers, sweeping them in 3 games. They finished the home stand 7-1 and improve to 22-8 at home. This is the 7th series sweep of the season, and there’s another week to go in May.

Game 1 – Suarez Shows Texas who the Real Ranger is

Phillies handed the ball to left hander Ranger Suarez, and he continued to make his case to win the NL Cy Young Award. Coming into the game, Suarez is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in one career start vs. the Rangers. He helped the Phillies take the first game of the series 5-2. Ranger pitched 7 innings, 5 Hits, 1 run, 1 Earned Run, 2 Walks, and capitalized the start, tying his career high in strikeouts with 10. When Ranger walked off the field after the 7th inning, the sellout crowd at CBP gave him a standing ovation.

“It just shows you the passion of our fan base,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “It shows how much they like to come out and watch our guys play.”

Pitching for the Rangers was Right-hander Jon Gray. Coming into the game Gray is 5-3 with a 4.18 ERA in career starts against the Phillies. His final line was 5 innings, 4 hits, 2 Runs, 2 Earned Runs, 3 Walks, and 4 Strikeouts.

The game was mostly a pitcher’s duel between Suarez and Gray, with the Phightins leading 2-1, until the Phillies scored again in the Bottom of the 6th inning making it 3-2. Bryce Harper hit his 11th Home Run of the year with a blast to dead center.

Bohm paces NL Lead in Doubles and RBI

In the bottom of the 8th Bohm knocked in his NL best 44th RBI on a double. Then Bryson Stott hit an RBI sac fly for a 5-2 lead.

The Phillies continue to come up with clutch hits all throughout the lineup. “It’s one guy after another. If one guy goes 0-4, then another guy goes 3-4 to get the job done.”, Harper said on a post-game interview on NBC Sports Philly.

Jose Alvarado came in the 9th and recorded his 9th save of the season pitching a scoreless inning. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

After this win, the Phillies were 35-14. No Phillies team has ever won 27 of 33 games – until now.  Phillies won for the 9th time in 11 games. They are having one of the best starts in Franchise history.

Ranger Suarez is now 9-0 with an ERA of 1.36. He is the first pitcher to have that many wins and an ERA that low in 58 years.

Game 2 – Walker and the Texas Rangers

The Phillies started Taijuan Walker (3-0, 4.91 ERA) on Wednesday. He got knocked out of his last start after taking a line drive off his foot. Luckily, it was only a contusion. Coming into the game, Walker is 2-2 with a 4.12 ERA in eight career games ( 7 starts ) against the Rangers. Walker wasn’t particularly efficient in this game. His final line was 4.2 innings, 6 Hits, 3 Runs, 3 Earned Runs, 4 Walks, 5 Strikeouts. He had thrown 86 pitches until he was relieved by Matt Strahm.

For the Rangers, Right Hander Dane Dunning ( 3-2, 4.10  ERA ) started for the Rangers. He was activated from the injured list after being out with a shoulder injury.  In his only career appearance against the Phillies last year, he allowed three hits over three scoreless innings.

In this game’s start, Dunning line went 3.1 innings, 4 Hits, 5 Runs, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 4 Strikeouts.

The Rangers jumped to a 2-0 lead after 2 innings. However, the Phillies keep Phightin and tied it back up to two a piece after 2 innings. Marsh hit an RBI Single, and Castellanos scored on a throwing error. In the bottom of the 3rd, Realmuto hit his 6th HR of the season extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Edmundo Sosa hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 4th inning making it a 6-2 ballgame in the Phillies favor. Alec Bohm continues to pulverize the baseball as he knocked in two, via an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th. That was Bohm’s NL leading 46th RBI of the season.

Harper’s Getting Hot

Harper hit his 12th home run of the game in the Bottom of the 8th. That was the cherry on top for the Phils, as the Phillies bullpen only gave up one earned run, after Taijuan Walker left the game. Jose Ruiz came into the 9th and finished the game for the Phillies who took game two 11-4, and won the Series.

With their 36 win of the season the Phillies are currently on pace to go 116-46.

“We know that in any situation we’re put in, we can come through it,” Realmuto said. “We have a chance to win every game no matter where we’re at. If we’re down late, we have confidence in ourselves. I think that just speaks to the culture that we’ve built here.”

Game 3 – Wheeler runs over the Rangers

Philly looking for a sweep as the have won the first two games of the Series with the Texas Rangers. In the final game of the series with the Rangers, Zack Wheeler took the mound. Wheeler is 1-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 5 career starts against the Rangers. Opposing him, Andrew Heaney started for the Rangers. Heaney is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in one career start against the Phils, dating back to 2014, when he was with the Marlins.

It has been a familiar theme this series, as the Rangers have drawn first blood, scoring first in every game including this one. Adolis Garcia took Wheeler deep in the 2nd inning for his 12th homer of the season. That put the Rangers up 1-0. Wheeler was cruising until the 7th inning, until he gave up his 2nd run of the game. He was solid in this one, going 7 innings, giving up 5 runs, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.

“I think we all have that mentality of going seven-plus every time,” Wheeler said. “If you don’t, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But that’s our goal. We have goals every time out and that’s one of them.”

Alvarado relieved Wheeler in the 8th. Jeff Hoffman came into the 9th to close out the game for his 4th save. Phillies beat the Rangers 5-2.

JT Realmuto continued his hot hitting, tying the game at 1 in the Bottom of the 3rd, with his 7th home run of the year. He extended his hit streak to 13 games.  Bohm who is the NL leader in Doubles and RBI coming into the game, went hitless going 0-4. Nick Castellanos went 2-4 with a home run. Hopefully this is the start of Nick getting hot. The Phillies bats were alive today, scattering 12 hits. The Rangers looked like anything but defending World Series Champions in this series. The Phillies brought out the brooms sweeping Texas, and winning the last two series via sweep.
