Phillies hire a new pitching coach. Caleb Cotham, 33, most recently was the assistant pitching coach and director of pitching with the Cincinnati Reds.
Caleb has some experience in playing in the Majors as well. 2015 with the Yankees under guess who? Yup, Joe Girardi and 2016 with his former employer twice over, the Reds. He also had a brief stint with the Seattle Mariners signing a minor league deal. However, announced his retirement just a few short months after.

I know what everyone is thinking. 2020 Cy Young Winner, Trevor Bauer is a free agent. We just signed his pitching coach. It’s a lock the Phillies sign Bauer. Trust me, I am drinking that kool-aid as well. Although, the realistic side of me says it makes way too much sense. Not a chance I can trust this front office to make the right call on that one.
Whether Cotham can draw a player like Bauer when free agency starts is yet to be seen. Joe Girardi on the other hand keeps recruiting his guys to join the squad to get this team rolling again. Now only is John Middleton can follow suit and get a new GM and Team President in here. We can get this officially started.
“Caleb has many strengths as a pitching coach that we believe will help him excel with our staff. He has a very good feel for evaluating pitchers and getting them back on track when things start to go wrong. The pitchers in Cincinnati were very complimentary of his game-planning ability and knowing how to play to each one of their strengths. Caleb is a tremendous competitor whose experience as both a major league pitcher and major league coach will enhance our staff.”
Joe Girardi
On another note, If the Phillies lose out on the upcoming bidding war for JT Realmuto. Trevor Bauer needs to be a top priority to team up with Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler. And of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a familiar face here with Caleb Cotham
