Phillies Prospect Breakdown: Robert Moore, 2B/SS, Reading Fightin Phils, AA

Many saw Moore, the son of current Rangers senior advisor Dayton Moore, as a potential first-round pick after he posted a .942 OPS and smashed 16 homers for Arkansas in 2021. He did not back that up with another strong season in 2022 as his OPS dipped to .801 with a .232 average. The Brewers liked his bounceback potential enough to take him No. 72 overall that July.

His first full season in High-A was fairly nondescript. He’ll get to try to rediscover his groove with a new organization after joining the Phillies in November in the trade that sent Oliver Dunn to the Brewers. At his best, Moore is a savvy middle infielder whose whole maybe be better than the sum of his parts.

He switched hits but has historically been better with more thump from the left side, though he was a bit more impactful the other way during what was largely a rough first full season. Even though he’s listed at 5-foot-9, there is some raw pop in there and he tends to have a solid idea of the strike zone, limiting strikeouts and drawing his fair share of walks. With solid contact skills, he’ll need to rediscover the ability to impact the ball to take the next step.

Moore is showing he is a very capable defender on both sides of second base, where his instincts, hands, and ability to slow the game down are assets. An above-average runner, he has more than enough range for short, but if he’s going to stick in one spot as an everyday player, it’s likely going to be second base because of his fringy arm strength. His feel for the game and defensive acumen give him a high floor as a utility infielder-type in the big leagues.
