Rob Thomson’s Master Plan

The Philadelphia Phillies head into Atlanta to face the Braves in this NDLS series. After coming off of defeating the Miami Marlins in two straight games, the offense looked really good, with everyone in the lineup contributing with a hit. The pitching of the Phillies was really good as well. Zach Wheeler had 8k’s in the first game. In the two games, the Phillies only 2 runs. Atlanta Braves, having fully rested with a bye and one thing on their mind from last year, and that’s revenge. Is this all a part of Rob Thomson’s master plan?

Throwing Everything But The Kitchen Sinker

In this game, Ranger Suarez played very well on the hill for the Phillies. He had great command of his pitch selection, especially his sinker. Ranger Suarez would crave through the Braves offense with his sinker. Even though Ranger Suarez only had 4k’s, he still had Braves batters swinging at tough pitches. He got the Phillies to the 4th inning. Now, I’ll give Spencer Strider credit. He held his own until the top of the 8th with 8th Ks. He also throws some heat with his fastball and sinkers. Getting Alec Bohm striking out 2 out of the 3 times he was Kade.

Playing at an Elite Level

The Phillies are playing at an elite level. Between Bryce Harper, offensive power, and Trea Turner, field defense was making it no day at the beach for the entire Braves team. Bryce Harper has aggressive base running with nothing holding back until he crosses home plate. Bryson Stott turned into an RBI with one base hit because Bryce Harper was that much hungrier. Trea Turner was making some incredible defensive plays throughout this game. One in particular play was late in the game, and he made a potential game-changer for the Braves, stopped, scooped the ball as it came right at him, and turned it into a double play by getting the two runners out.

Topper Staying The Course:

I loved what I saw out of the Topper’s ( Rob Thomson Phillies manager)  playbook, which was aggressive base stealing. The Phillies were 6 for 7 stealing bases. constantly putting his team in scoring position, making it hard for the Braves pitching staff to focus on the batter at the plate with Phillies base runners ready to make their move. Rob Thomson deserves a lot of credit in game 1. not just with the offense stealing bases but also pulling Ranger Suarez early in the game and having a lot of trust in the bullpen. Just when it looked like things were going to get ugly. The Phillies bullpen got themselves out of a jam. Seranthony Dominguez had 3k’s on the night. also, Rob Thomson’s showing puts in Orion Kerkering, who just made his Major League debut that long ago.
