Sam Howell | QB | North Carolina

There has been a lot of talk about how Howie Roseman might draft a QB in this upcoming draft, even after verbally committing to Jalen Hurts. Sam Howell, QB from North Carolina, could be that QB the Eagles could draft. The North Carolina native showed off his tangibles playing for the UNC Tarheels and could develop into a solid NFL starter down the road.

College Career

Initially committed to Florida State, Howell was convinced by new Tarheel head coach Mack Brown to stay in North Carolina and commit to UNC. Under Mack Brown’s offense, Howell would flourish for the 2019 season. He would finish the season with 3,641 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Howell would lead UNC to a respectable 6-6 regular-season record playing Temple University in the Military Bowl. Howell would lead the Tarheels to victory while receiving the MVP away for posting 294 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day. He would also be announced ACC Rookie of the Year.

Sam Howell would mimic his success in the 2020 season. He would put up 3,586 yards, 7 interceptions, and 7 interceptions for the season. UNC, with the help of Howell’s solid play, would finish the regular season 8-3, ranked 13th, and poised to play in the Orange Bowl. In the Orange Bowl, UNC would be matched up against Texas A&M. The Tarheels would struggle in the game against the Aggies and so would Howell. He would only put up 234 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the 41-27 loss.

The 2021 season would prove to be a down year for Sam Howell. He would only post 3,056 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions for the year. He would also put up 828 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns though. The Tarheels would again go 6-6 in the regular season facing South Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Tarheels would lose to the Gamecocks 38-21. Howell would throw for 205 yards and 1 touchdown in the bowl game. Howell would declare for the NFL Draft as the career leading in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and total offense for UNC.

Draft Profile and Fit

Only measured at 6’1″ and 220 pounds, has the tangibles to make it in the NFL. He has decent arm strength and could hit receivers down the field. He also has the ability to climb the pocket and read the defense before making a decision. Howell wouldn’t also force a throw as he would use his legs if he musts. Can also be regarded as a RedZone runner with his running ability.

Howell does have some weaknesses though. Experts say he needs touch and timing work. Lacks accuracy in drive throws. Has a slow throwing release. He would also take too many sacks.

Sam Howell is projected to go in the late 1st round or in the 2nd round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This would be a perfect prospect for Howie to draft if Howell would slide down to him in the 2nd round. With the type of offense Siriani plays and how the need for a QB with a solid arm, it would be a smart interesting pick for the Eagles to grab him if Howell slides in the draft.
