Seals Eke Out A Win In Front End Of Doubleheader

The San Diego Seals played the first of two games this weekend in Fort Worth, facing the Panther City Lacrosse Club at Dickies Arena. The Seals came in winners of five of their last six games. Meanwhile, Panther City had won four of their last five. The stars shone on both sides, but it was Austin Staats of the Seals scoring the game winning goal in overtime for a 10-9 victory. San Diego improves to 8-3 on the season; they head back home to face the league-leading Toronto Rock Saturday night. Panther City falls to 5-5 with the loss; they also have a doubleheader this weekend, hosting the Rochester Knighthawks on Sunday afternoon.

Seals trail after close first half

Panther City opened the scoring with Jason Knox finding the net at the 3:41 mark. Curtis Dickson equalized for the Seals at 7:27, but Will Malcom struck back at 8:21 to give Panther City a 2-1 lead after one quarter. The teams alternated goals in the second quarter, scoring three apiece. Tre Leclaire (4:49), Wes Berg (7:58), and Curtis Dickson (9:20 power play) tallied for San Diego. Panther City countered with Phil Caputo (5:56) and two from Callum Crawford (8:43; 13:48 power play) to take a 5-4 halftime lead.

Seals escape with win in overtime

Knox (5:26) and Caputo (6:02) extended PCLC’s lead to 7-4, but Berg (14:31) and Austin Staats (14:51) cut the deficit to one entering the final frame. Dane Dobbie (6:57 fourth quarter) tied the game at 7, but Crawford scored another power play goal (8:23) to put PCLC back up. Kyle Jackson tied the game again when he poked the ball out of goaltender Nick Damude’s stick and into the net (8:58). A second goal from Staats (10:46) gave the Seals their first lead of the night. Both San Diego goals came while PCLC defender Brent Mitchell was serving a 5-minute major penalty for cross checking. Ryan Sheridan (11:50) leveled the game at 9-9, and fans were treated to some extra lacrosse. At the 3:23 mark of overtime, Staats would net his hat trick goal and and give the Seals the win.
