I have been thinking about who to spotlight next and I believe it’s time to take a look at a homegrown athlete. That is why I have decided on West Philadelphia’s own 2021 draft prospect edge rusher Shaka Toney, Penn State. “In West Philadelphia born and raised” on the Football field is where Shaka spent most of his days. I feel Toney would be a great fit for this Eagles team and farewell in the D-End rotation.
Born and raised in West Philly about 11 minutes from where I grew up in Grays Ferry, South Philly. 2021 draft prospect edge rusher Shaka Toney, Penn State has been doing big things since his days at Imhotep High School. As a senior, he was the Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-State after recording 97 tackles and 21 sacks.
2021 draft prospect edge rusher Shaka Toney, Penn State redshirted his true freshman season. As a redshirt freshman, Toney recorded 20 tackles with 6.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks forcing 2 fumbles. The Big Ten Network named him to their All-Freshman team as well. He finished his redshirt sophomore season with 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. Toney was named second-team All-Big Ten Conference after making 41 tackles (8 for a loss) and 6.5 sacks.
- Selected as team captain his senior season
- Keeps his hat and pads low when coming off the ball
- Lateral movement is fluid and sudden
- Unusually slippery as a run defender
- The smooth body lacks cut and prime definition
- Doesn’t always play with optimal juice and energy
- Can be bullied off his spot at the point of attack
- Below-average physicality
Shaka Toney is a projected Day 2 or early Day 3 pick. The Philadelphia Eagles should use one of theirs to keep him home. Click Here for more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL Draft Coverage.
