Shamrocks sink Burnaby Lakers

The Victoria Shamrocks routed the Burnaby Lakers 23-5 on Sunday night in WLA action at The Q Centre.

The win moves the Shamrocks into a three-way tie with the Coquitlam Adanacs and Nanaimo Timbermen for first place with nine wins each. That being said, Coquitlam has two games in hand on the Timbermen and the Shamrocks have three games in hand.

This game turned into a shooting gallery on Lakers’ goaltenders Zak Boychuk and Brody Harris as they faced 71 shots in the loss.

The King brothers had an outstanding night, as Jesse put up eight goals and five assists, while Marshal had two goals and six assists for Victoria.

Shamrocks get the party started

Victoria jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in this one with Jacob Ruest scoring 1:25 into the game. Seven seconds later Keagan White took a holding penalty for the Lakers. Rhys Duch capitalized 10 seconds into the man-advantage to make it 2-0. Jesse King would round out the three-goal run for Victoria at 5:12.

The Lakers got on the board at 5:58 with an even-strength marker from Ethan M’Lot. Kieran Mckay added a shorthanded goal at 9:38 to get Burnaby within one.

After that, it was all Victoria. Jesse King scored three straight goals to round out the first-period scoring. Victoria held a 6-2 lead heading into the first break.

Victoria blows the doors open in the second

Jesse King added a shorthanded marker 2:45 into the second period for his fourth straight goal. Brother Marshal got in on the action 31 seconds later shorthanded on the same penalty.

When it rains it pours. Jesse King would add another at 6:02 and Marshal King scored at 7:29 to round out a seven-goal run for the Shamrocks.

The Burnaby Lakers temporarily stopped momentum at 9:55 with a goal from Toron Eccleston. Goals from Larson Sundown, Jacob Ruest, Matt Yager and Chris Wardle would extend the Shamrocks’ lead to 14-3.

Eccleston got on the board again at 17:01 to make it a 10-goal game, but Dan Smith replied seven seconds later for Victoria.

Eccleston got his hat trick at 18:51 to round out the scoring to make it 15-5 for Victoria heading into the third.

Nothing by Shamrocks in the third

Ryan Atkinson got the nod in goal for Victoria for the third period and pitched a shutout against the Lakers. He stopped all 10 shots he faced as the Victoria outscored their opponents 8-0.

Nick Preston got the scoring going at 5:30. Liam Phillips followed that up with Victoria’s third shorthanded goal of the game at 7:04.

Sundown scored his second of the game at 8:37 followed by a solo effort from Tyler Burton 13 seconds later.

Yager found the back of the net at 9:36, while a pair of goals by Jesse King and a marker from Ruest rounded out the scoring.
