This game was marked by both starting goaltenders for the teams being out with Covid 19. So it put the game in doubt even before either team took the field.
It was an ideal situation for Panther City to try and capitalize on not having to score on Frank Scigliano instead having to shoot on Chris Origlieri who is a 19 year old rookie.
On the other hand,Panther City’s Nick Damude is a very capable backstop who last Season played for San Diego so he should be very aware of many of the Seal’s players tendencies.
First Quarter
Wes Berg started it all off with a dish from Patrick Shoemay at the 1:55 mark. Berg Has scored in every game in his Career.
Starting San Diego on a 1-0 lead, It was also the first time San Diego has scored first in 8 games. Phil Caputo for Panther City tied it up by scoring on Chris Origlieri who is the Youngest player in the league in goal at 19 years of age.
Berg came right back and scored his second of the game giving the Seals a 2-1 lead.
Panther City went on a 3 goal run putting them up 4-2. Dane Dobbie said anything your team can do I can do better, and scored 3 in a row setting his hattrick for the game in the first quarter.
Seals went in front 5-4 with Mac O’Keefe, who is considered a long distance threat came in close and put one past Nick Damude with his 3rd of the season to push the Seals lead to 6-4. Panther City’s Jordan Trottier finished off the opening frame with a Seals lead 6-5.
To The Second
Panther City opened up the scoring in the 2nd frame with Mike Triolo putting one in the net to tie the game at 6-6.
This game turned out to be a shootout and the scoring went back and forth with both teams trading goals.
O’Keefe put a score in only to see Panther City tie it 7-7. Big game Austin Staats potted 2 goals in the net and Dane Dobbie dumped a pingpong quick fire shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the game with the Seals lead 10-7.
Panther City Rookie Patrick Dodds put a very close shot in the net on Seals Rookie Goaltender Origlieri cutting down the Seals lead to 10-8 at Halftime.
This is Shaping Up As A Classic
THIRD QUARTER Austin Staats and Mac O’Keefe each put up the finishing goals on hat tricks for San Diego with each scoring in the Third Quarter and Phil Caputo also finished his hat trick for Panther City scoring in the transition sprinting off the bench.
The game was getting very Chippy, with heated tempers causing minor fist trading and some pushing and shoving but cooler heads prevailed and no major fights broke out. Seals lead at the end of the frame 12-9.
Can Panther City Get it Done?
FOURTH QUARTER Panther City Came out SHOOTING with two over the shoulder pass open field quick strikes that put Panther City within one.
Dane Dobbie showed why he is a former MVP and put up his 5th goal in a clutch situation to end the run of Panther City Seals and a 13 to 11 score.
Panther City favored the open field mismatch with clear scoring, not waiting for the Defense or the offense to get set and came back once more but, San Diego led 13-12 with four minutes left to play.
The referees tried to keep the Chippiness down and let the penalties fly with both teams racking up over 20 minutes in the box.
Wes Berg put in his third of the night for his hat trick ending his 2 quarter scoring drought.
Panther City tried to create an advantage and pulled goalie Nick Damude creating a Panther City Man Up advantage opportunity that backfired as Cam Holding got a loose ball and sprinted down the field with an open goal to score, ending the night San Diego 15-12 Win.
Post Mortum
Ultimately the game was a lot closer than myself and most lacrosse “experts” thought it was going to be with the scoring going back and forth and a lot of corner shots and low to high bouncers.
The Seals are the first team to win at home in the Western Division, which is a dangerous stat when you consider how competitive that division is.
Dane Dobbie scored his 450th career Regular season goal and passed Shooter Sanderson on the all time scoring list. It was a very exciting game, with a lot of players scoring Hat tricks 4 on the Seals and 1 on Panther City. Every single offensive player for San Diego put up points not relying on a single player but spreading the ball around effectively making the Seals a very dangerous team going forward
