Spencer Howard to start Sunday?

His Time Is Now

As we mentioned last night on the Edge of Philly Sports Show, Spencer Howard getting the start on Sunday against the Braves is starting to look more like reality than just hope. With Jake Arrieta and Vince Velasquez to start Games 1 and 2. There seems to be a vacant spot for Sunday’s game. Joe Girardi as yet to confirm Howard for Sunday. However, there is no better opportunity to get the 24-year-old top pitching prospect some needed work in the Majors.

Looking forward, if Spencer does indeed get the nod to start Sunday. It is unlikely he will be sent back down immediately. It’s time for the ball club to give Howard a real opportunity and grow into a role. Also, highly doubtful he will see any bullpen action. Spencer has never worked out of the bullpen. Already knowing Howard is going to play a large part in the starting rotation for years to come. It would be wise to move Vinny Velasquez to the Bullpen where they need all the help in the world. Not to mention, Velasquez has seen brief success pitching out of the pen.

Bullpen In Shambles

The Bullpen has been disastrous in this early stage of the season. With the season already being a trial in error, making much-needed adjustments to the bullpen is expected. Moving Vince alongside Nick Pivetta, Adam Morgan, Tommy Hunter, and Hector Neris into relief situations could solidify

Phillies Potential Starting Rotation:
Aaron Nola
Zach Wheeler
Zach Elfin
Jake Arrieta
Spencer Howard

Relief Pitchers:
Vince Velasquez
Nick Pivetta
Tommy Hunter
Adam Morgan
Ramon Rosso
Hector Neris

Whether Spencer Howard gets the start on Sunday. Regardless, things are leaning that way. If he doesn’t, we know his time to shine be soon. At this point what do the Phillies have to lose?
