The Eagles Barely Survived the Trip to Foxborough

The Philadelphia Eagles headed into Foxborough to take on the New England Patriots. However, the New England Patriots are looking to turn things around with a new season, dealing with the NFC champions. That’s asking for a lot out of the gate on week 1 of the NFL. The Eagles want to prove that they are the team to beat in the NFL. The Eagles barely survived the trip to Foxborough.

Eagles Defense Caused Headaches Early

The Eagles ran the ball with five straight run plays and converted with a field goal.  The Eagles defense came out on fire. Darius Slay comes up huge with an interception. Runs it back for 70 yards and a pick-six. Jordan Davis would cause Ezekiel Elliott to fumble and be picked up by Zach Cunningham. Jalen Hurts would run two passing plays, one to AJ Brown that would put the Eagles in striking distance. Jalen makes the move and finds DeVonta Smith in the end zone. The Eagles paid dividends with the two turnovers. The birds go up 16 to 0.

Bill Belichick Makes Adjustments

The Patriots, after being down 16-0, Bill Belichick makes the right adjustments. Exposing the Eagles secondary. The Eagles’ defense was leaving the middle of the field open, and Bill O’Brien (the Patriots’ offensive coordinator ) was taking full advantage of that.

On one drive, Mack Jones was passing the ball around and getting everyone involved. The plays included Mike Gesicki, Ju Ju Smith Schuster, Demario Douglas, Ty Montgomery, and Hunter Henry for the touchdown.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots defense made things uncomfortable for the Eagles offense. Eagles struggled in the second quarter to get anything going offensively. I don’t know if not playing in the preseason had a role in this game. Getting the Eagles to work off the rust seemed like a tall order. The new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator learning their jobs and team could also play a factor. Patriots, now having momentum with Mack Jones, would find Kendrick Bourne wide open, deep across the middle on a crossing route.

Is Jake Elliot Eagles MVP of the Game?

Jake Elliot made 4/4 of kicks, getting the Eagles a total of 13 points. He was 1 for 2 on PAT (Point After Touchdown). The longest kick of the day was from 56 yards out. Every time, the Eagles couldn’t convert in the red zone. Jake Elliot bailed out this football team. You could say it’s the reason why this Eagles team is 1-0.

My takeaway is that the Eagles need to hit practice hard this week because it’s a short turnaround until Thursday. When the Minnesota Vikings come to town. The playcalling needs to get better on both sides of the ball. Hopefully, this is just growing pains. Jalen Hurts needs to get into a rhythm early. The Eagles barely survived the trip to Foxborough. On to the home opener this Thursday.
