The Eagles Might Draft a QB

The Eagles are very likely to add a quarterback through the NFL draft. Unlike a lot of reports out there, it could very well be toward the mid to late rounds of the draft. Quarterback Shane Buechele from Southern Methodist University might be that player the Eagles are looking for and he could fall right in their laps by the end of the draft.

Texas Time!

Buechele actually played for two schools during his NCAA college football career. He first played for the University of Texas from his freshman year to junior but then transferred to SMU for a redshirt junior year and senior year. At Texas, he excelled during as a freshman throwing for 2,958 yards (a UT freshman record), 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions (the most he would ever throw in a year during college). He would start for just 7 games appearing in 9 total his sophomore year throwing for 1,405 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Buechele eventually lost the starting job to Sam Ehlinger which would cause him to enter the transfer portal to move on somewhere he would get playing time.

Buechele to SMU

In his first season with Southern Methodist University, Buechele threw for 3,929 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He would set SMU marks for single-season season passing yards and single season passing touchdowns. Add on the most single-game touchdown passes, consecutive games with 2+ TD passes (11) and most passing yards by a Mustang in their first start (360 yards). He would almost match that performance in his Senior year by throwing for 3,095 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. The Mustangs went on to a 7-3 record making them bowl eligible but the team withdrew from the Tropical Smoothie Frisco Bowl due to Covid-19 concerns.

What about the Birds?

So how does Shane Buechele fit in the Eagles plan? Well after paying Joe Flacco 3.5 Million for this year, the team doesn’t have much cap room to sign a career back up or even one that has been in the league for a few years. They will most likely turn to the draft for their 3rd string quarterback. The Eagles are known for this especially recently with Nate Sudfeld who was on this team until this offseason. But Shane Buechele has the tanglibles to command this offense if he needs to step in that role. He shows he can roll out and move around while making very accurate throws. His time at SMU showed he improved vastly and learned during his time at Texas. I believe the Eagles will take him around the 5th to later rounds and solidify the quarterback room.
