2023 Season

The Phillies acquired Soto along with Kody Clements for Nick Maton, and Matt Verling from the Detroit Tigers right before the start of the 2023 MLB Spring Training. Soto was thought to be in play for a back-end of the bullpen job for the Phillies in 2023. While Soto flashed dominance at times, his first season in Philadelphia was mired in inconsistency. He finished the year with a 4.62 ERA and drastic splits against righties and lefties. Lefties hit .127/.205/.228 against Soto in 2023. Righties hit .255/.327/.393. He also finished with a 5.40 ERA over the last two months of the season.

Soto’s stuff is indeed fantastic. Even though his upper-90s fastball has never missed bats at the rate you’d expect it to, it showed some developmental progress in 2023, leaning into some of Soto’s natural mechanical strengths. He has an incredibly powerful lower half, and his huge stride down the mound combined with his low-Ish slot creates a shallow, almost uphill approach angle on his fastball.

Inconsistency is what has dogged Soto throughout his 2023 season. When he’s on he’s on when he’s off he’s way off. He finished the season with a 4.62 ERA, struck out 65, walked 22 in 60.1 innings of work. The bottom line with Soto he never consistently showed that closer stuff the Phillies were looking for when they acquired him.

2024 Projection

Your guess is as good as mine. He figures to be one of the committee bullpen members. If he can be more consistent, he will be a major factor in the back end of the Phillies bullpen. If he can not it will be a carbon copy of his 2023 season.
