The Game

Justin Sourdif got things going early for the Checkers as he beat Ersson at the 4:44 mark of the 1st period to give the Checkers an early 1-0 lead. It would go from bad to worse for the Phantoms as Callie Sjalin would make it 2-0 Checkers at the 6:06 mark. Here come the Phantoms with one of those pesky late-period goals. Artem Anisimov (1) would get the late tally at 19:17 to cut the Checkers lead 2-1. That would be your score heading into intermission.

In the second the play would be back and forth through most of the period. The Checkers thought they had pushed their lead to 3-1 with Sourdif’s second of the night on the penalty shot but upon further review, the goal was disallowed. So, heading into the second intermission the score remained 2-1 Checkers.

In the third things would start to heat up. The Phantoms Olle Lycksell (1), one of the players that shinned late in the season for the Flyers tied things up at the:40 mark. The Checkers would strike back Cory Conacher would make it 3-2 Charlotte at the 6:46 mark. The former Flyer Connor Bunnaman would put the Checkers up by 2 4-2 at 9:24. just over 3 minutes later Olle Lycksell (2) would score his second of the night for the Phantoms cutting into Charlottes lead 4-3 at 12:03. A minute and a half later Elliot Desnoyers (1) another of the Flyers hopefuls would tie things up at 4-4 at 13:36.

The Finish

From there until the end of regulation both goal tenders would stand on their heads as they fought to keep the game tied. The Game would end, and we are heading into overtime. In the first overtime, it was the goalies specifically Errson who shined. Errson faced 11 shots in that frame and turned away them all. The Phantoms managed 8 shots as well. The second overtime was a carbon copy of the first. Both teams were feeling each other out. The teams were very careful not to spring the other on an odd-man rush going back the other way. The Phantoms would manage 9 shots to the Checkers’ 6 shots in that overtime. But at the 18:48 mark, Lucas Carlsson would get the game-winner for the Checkers 5-4.
