After a hard-fought 1-0 loss in Dallas, the Philadelphia Union needed to settle back in and get a solid win. They did that Saturday night, defeating DC United 6-0 in the nation’s capital. Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney’s side had minimal responses to the Union’s suffocating defense and potent offense. This match served as a much-needed reset for a team that had struggled in the final third on Wednesday night. Union dismantle DC.

The first half saw Union keeper Andre Blake make a spectacular save on Ravel Morrison of DC, Followed not too long after by Taxiarchis Fountas. Hitting the right post from the center of the box. From there, it was all Union. After three solid attempts toward the goal in three minutes, the Union finally found the back of the net in the 37th minute.
When Julian Carranza found Mikael Uhre in the center of the box for a perfectly executed goal to put the visiting Union up 1-0. During the added time at the end of the first half, Uhre is fouled in the box by Jose Alfaro of DC. After a VAR review, it was determined that the foul warranted a penalty kick for Philadelphia. Union leading goal scorer Daniel Gazdag stepped up for the penalty and buried his 13th goal of the season. Making it a 2-0 Union lead at halftime. Union dismantle DC.

Philadelphia came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. In the 47th minute, Julian Carranza would score off a feed from Daniel Gazdag to make it a 3-0 score in favor of the Union. A Beautiful play by Taxiarchis Fountas from a tough angle was saved by Andre Blake in the 63rd minute, and that would be the last attempt on goal to be handled by the Union goalkeeper. The offense would back up the defense by opening up the lead even further with Carranza completing his second career hat trick (and second against DC United) in the 74th minute when he intercepted a pass from DC keeper Rafael Romo. A goal by forward Corey Burke in the 79th minute capped off a fantastic night for the Union as a whole. Union dismantle DC.

To no one’s surprise, Julian Carranza was named Man of the Match. With his hat trick and was also given MLS Player of the Week honors. The Union now sits five points ahead of second-place Montreal in the Eastern Conference standings. With 7 matches left in the regular season.
