Warriors Offense Awakens In Upset Of The Bandits

Week 14 of the National Lacrosse League season and the march to May has officially begun. The reigning champions Buffalo Bandits (5-6) paid a visit to the struggling Vancouver Warriors (3-8). 

First Quarter:

Josh Byrne of the Bandits started the scoring just 0:55 seconds in, thanks to an assist from Dylan Robinson and Cam Wyers. Vancouver answered with Kevin Crowley scoring a power-play goal at 2:52, with an assist from Keegan Bal and Adam Charalambides. Charalambides himself then scored at 3:16 with a follow-up power-play off a Crowley feed.  Ryan Martel continued the Warriors scoring at 4:25, with help from Charalambides and Aden Walsh.

Tehoka Nanticoke finally got Buffalo back on the board scoring a power-play goal at 4:48, followed by Kyle Buchanan scoring off a Josh Byrne pass to tie the game at 5:58.

Vancouver’s Keegan Bal closed the quarter’s scoring with another power-play goal at 12:16 to give the Warriors the lead once again.

The first quarter ended with Vancouver leading 4-3. 

Second Quarter:

Vancouver came roaring out of the gate with a four goal run.

Riley Loewen scored twice to start the quarter.  First at 0:42 seconds off a Charalambides pass, and then at 2:21 with Bal and Mydske assisting.  Kevin Crowley then scored at 3:09 thanks to the work of Ryan Martel.  Keegan Bal added to the lead scoring off a Crowley feed at 5:04.

Dhane Smith stopped the Vancouver run converting a Josh Byrne pass at 5:40, but Charalambides replied immediately with help from Riley Loewen and Steph Charbonneau just 0:24 seconds later. Buffalo would close out the quarter’s scoring at 6:34 when Chris Cloutier converted a Dhane Smith pass for the talley.

Vancouver led 9-5 at the half.

Third Quarter:

Buffalo started the third quarter with a pair of quick goals.  Chris Cloutier finished a Kyle Buchanan pass at 3:43, followed by Josh Byrne with a laser off a Cloutier feed at 4:36. 

Riley Loewen would stop the Bandits mini run scoring at 7:20 off a Kevin Crowley pass, followed by Kyle Killen adding a talley with help from Adam Charalambides and Crowley to close the Warrior’s scoring at 9:38.

The Bandits kept pushing.  Josh Byrne finished a Dhane Smith pass at 13:08, then Chase Fraser quick sticked a Chris Cloutier feed at 14:29.

After three quarters Vancouver led 11-9.

Fourth Quarter:

The Warriors started quickly with Kevin Crowley scoring 0:38 seconds in, then Keegan Bal on a quick pass from Kyle Killen at 4:30 to open a four goal lead.

Buffalo would launch an offensive assault to tighten the game.  Josh Byrne converted an Ian MacKay pass at 6:49, followed by Kyle Buchanan scoring at 7:43.  Byrne would score again at 12:28 to close the gap to one goal, but that would be as close as they would come.

Vancouver got back in the win column with a 13-12 victory.

Game Stats:

Vancouver outshot Buffalo 57-51, also winning the faceoff battle 17-12.

Buffalo went 2 for 6 on the power-play, while the Warriors went 2 for 7.

Gary Groob has been involved with Lacrosse for the majority of his life, whether playing, coaching, or covering the sport for the media.

An avid fan, with a real drive about helping to “grow the game”, Gary became part of podcasts about the game in 2010. Through the podcasts, Mr. Groob was given an opportunity to write about lacrosse, and the rest as they say, is history.

In the year 2020, Mr. Groob was made the media person for the Arena Lacrosse League, voted onto the board of directors of the Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club, as well as being made administrator of the Lacrosse page “Global Lacrosse” with a membership of 9000 members in over 90 Countries. Gary was also made an administrator of Lacrosse History Past Present and Future in 2022.

Mr. Groob co-hosts a weekly Lacrosse show on Spanglish Sports World, and ZingoTV channel 250, as well as writes a weekly lacrosse column for La Portada Canada News (both in print, and online).

Gary also hosts a Lacrosse talk show and podcast for The Edge of Philly Sports Network, seen live Sunday nights at 9pm (ET), and archived on the Edge of Philly YouTube page, as well as Spotify.

Mr. Groob’s other sports interests include Hockey, Football, Boxing, Wrestling, and Baseball, competing competitively in Boxing and Wrestling for many years.
