What To Watch For In Flyers Developmental Camp

The Flyers 2024 developmental camp kicked off Monday. Tuesday’s second day of camp they featured several three-quarter-hour skating sessions involving the forward and defenseman groups.  39 players were on hand for this annual post-draft NHL ritual.  Flyers management was also on hand to witness the proceedings. Head Coach John Tortorella was also present. John LeClair was present to be an on-ice distributor of passes on many drills.

The two players for me to watch this year aside from Flyers 1st round draft pick Jett Luchanko. Denver Barkey and Oliver Bonk. Teammates with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Barkey and Bonk will be interesting decisions for the Flyers this summer. Both are coming off outstanding 2023-24 campaigns. Barkey registered 102 points and is a center in a position of need for the Flyers. Bonk had a 67-point season and was a whopping plus 28 when on the ice. Both players have been signed, and both have now completed three full seasons of major junior hockey.

And of course, there is the Flyers first-round selection, Jett Luchanko. The Canadian forward did not get a chance to showcase his speed in the drills that occurred during the first session of the day. The projected second-round selection in this year’s draft was selected 13th overall by the Flyers. Jett lives and dies with his speed and ability to create offense.

The Goalie

The final piece of my developmental camp puzzle must be Flyer’s 2023 second-round draft pick. Goalie Carson Bjarnason. The goalie position has once again been thrust into the forefront of the Flyers organization. The Flyers are back at square one again with a goalie. Bjarnason joins a group of five other Flyer goalie prospects that are the latest crop of prospects with hopes to bring stability to a position that has lacked stability since 1985. Bjarnason posted a 24-win and 3.01 GAA with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League his third with the team. He is also signed.

Year two of the rebuild has kicked off and the Flyers are off and running. How far they run from here on is anyone’s guess
