What’s next for the Eagles Secondary? An Updated Look. The beginning of free agency to most was lackluster. Not to me, though. Howie didn’t overpay for Jalen Mills. That was the Patriots. They didn’t go out and make any impulsive decisions. Loyalty didn’t play a factor. All things we have seen this team do time and time again.
What Howie did was let things play out. Unfold. Waited to see where the market was heading and put this team first ahead of his ego with a big signing or two.
The Eagles sign former Vikings safety, Anthony Harris. I love this move! Clearly their biggest splash into the 2021 free agency pool to date. Only 29 years old. A one-year “prove it” deal. As well as a big upgrade from Jalen Mills, IMO. That is not a knock a Mills. I was a fan. However, they couldn’t figure out what to do with him. Safety or Corner, which is it? It really is just one less headache to deal with. Especially with a new defensive coordinator coming in.
Rodney McLeod has no timeline to return as of yet. Still healing from a torn ACL back in December. Harris is a bit of a safety net for the Eagles. No pun intended. With K’Von Wallace expected to his next step forward and get his first real opportunity to make an impact. Harris gives this team more veteran leadership with playmaker ability that is needed in the defensive backfield.
I don’t expect Harris to be the last we see of the additions to the secondary in free agency. I believe they sign another veteran and draft a rookie. The Eagles are in dire need of a cornerback opposite Darius Slay. Avonte Maddox didn’t work out and as we know Jalen Mills is off to New England. Maddox should slide back into the slot corner position where he is best. Nickell Robey-Coleman on his one-year deal for the 2020 season was a bust. A very surprising bust.
No Adoree, No Problem
The Eagles originally had a meeting set with former Titans Corner, Adoree Jackson. However, Adoree temporarily lost his mind and agreed to sign with the New York VaGiants. Sorry, I mean Giants.
There are still plenty of options out there. Some young options as well. Now, what is believed to be the third tier of free agency, is where you find value. Steven Nelson (28, Steelers), Mac Alexander (28, Bengals), and Gareon Conley (25, Texans) would all be a welcomed upgrade to the Eagles secondary at Corner. Steven Nelson looking for a big pay may be priced right out of the Eagles budget, however. Conley to me is the most intriguing. A low-risk/high reward type of signing for a young player on the cheap.
Who knows. Maybe they sign a 30-year-old, AJ Bouye. My point is the Eagles have the setup in place to put together a really good secondary. I think Jonathan Gannon is gonna work wonders with not only our corner and safety positions but with our defensive overall.
With this year’s 2021 NFL Draft being absolutely loaded at the secondary positions. Whether it is free agency or the draft the Eagles are in a great spot to add talent. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.
