It’s the third week of the Premier Lacrosse League 2023 season. The revamped Redwoods were taking on the two-time champion Whipsnakes. Redwoods were rolling, starting the season with two victories. Meanwhile, Whipsnakes were looking to get into the win column after losing their first two games. Will Manny and Matt Rambo combined for 13 points in an 18-11 win that tightens up the standings. Whipsnakes improve to 1-2; Redwoods fall to 2-1.

Whipsnakes take commanding lead in first half

The first quarter of the game started with Whipsnakes taking a commanding lead. Tucker Dordevic opened up the scoring for the Whips but Ryder Garnsey, who is having a great start to the season, evened the score. Connor Krist, Garrett Leadmon, Matt Rambo scored, and Colin Squires launched a two-pointer for the Whips. Redwoods’ Wes Berg closed out the scoring to end the frame with the Whipsnakes leading 6-2.

Redwoods’ first quarter issues took a turn for the worse in the second quarter. Zed Williams and Will Manny scored twice for the Whips, and Matt Rambo added another. Tucker Dordevic then dropped another two pointer. Garnsey scored the only goal of the quarter for Redwoods as they found themselves trailing 13-3 at the half.

Whipsnakes cruise to first win

As the third quarter began, Redwoods fans hoped for an explosion of two-pointers, or a scoring surge from Myles Jones and Rob Pannell. Both did score, but only one goal each. Bryce Young countered for the Whips to keep a nine-goal lead, 14-5, heading into the fourth quarter.

Whatever Redwoods coach Nat St. Laurent said to the team in the fourth, it had an impact! Garnsey scored four goals, and Jules Heningburg and Rob Pannell each added one more to lead the Redwoods assault. But it was too little, too late. Rambo added two more (one assisted by goalie Kyle Bernlohr), and Will Manny added a two-pointer, Whipsnakes’ third of the game. Final score Whipsnakes 18, Redwoods 11.
