Whipsnakes Pull Out Overtime Victory

The Whipsnakes (2-0) faced the Waterdogs (0-2) in the late game Saturday in PLL action.  While the Waterdogs seemed to have the game well in hand, a strong fourth quarter by the Whipsnakes put everyone on the edge of their seats.  With a six goal quarter by the Whipsnakes, the Waterdog team had to scramble to tie the game up with under a minute to go to force overtime.  In the extra period, Brad Smith of the “Whips” scored at the 4:45 mark to give them the 12-11 victory.

To The Game:

Mikie Schlosser and Michael Sowers were the only goal Scorers of the first quarter, putting the Waterdogs up.

After one quarter, Waterdogs 2 Whipsnakes 0.

Second Quarter:

The Waterdogs picked up where they left off to start the second quarter.  Zach Currier increased the Waterdogs lead converting a Michael Sowers pass at 1:02. 

Jay Carlson finally got the Whipsnakes on the board when he fired a Mike Chanenchuk pass in at 2:27.  Mikie Schlosser fired a bomb from beyond the arc for a two point goal at 3:24, followed by Ryan Brown converting a Michael Sowers pass at 4:32 to stake the Waterdogs to a 6-1 lead.

Jay Carlson scored his second of the game converting a Brad Smith pass at 8:12, followed by Matt Rambo cutting the lead to three with a goal 0:40 seconds later.

At the half, Waterdogs 6 Whipsnakes 3.

Third Quarter:

Connor Kelly opened the third quarter scoring when he converted an Ethan Walker pass at 1:51, followed by Jack Hannah at 3:10 giving the Waterdogs a commanding 8-3 lead.

Bryan Cole scored for the Whipsnakes at 5:15, followed by Connor Kirst off a Matt Rambo feed at 9:26.  Jack Hannah scored his second of the game for the Waterdogs at 10:04.

Fourth Quarter:

The Whipsnakes controlled play through most of the quarter.  Brad Smith opened the scoring at 3:04, followed by Justin Guterding converting a Jay Carlson pass 0:06 seconds later.

Jay Carlson scored the next two for the Whipsnakes and ties the game at nine, with just over three minutes to go.  Jack Hannah gave the Waterdogs the lead back, but two more quick goals from the Whipsnakes had the ‘Dogs scrambling to tie it up.  Connor Kelly potted at goal with just 0:48 seconds left in the fourth, and this was headed to overtime.

After regulation, Whipsnakes 11 Waterdogs 11.

Overtime:

This quarter had a torrid pace with both teams getting opportunities to end it, but at 4:45 Brad Smith fired a shot past Waterdogs goalie Matt DeLuca for the Whipsnakes victory.

Final score, Whipsnakes 12 Waterdogs 11.

Game Stats:

  • Shots on goal favored the Whipsnakes 27-23.
  • Joey Nardella of the Whipsnakes controlled the faceoffs going 22 of 26, while Zach Currier of the Waterdogs had a long night going 2 of 21.
  • Whipsnakes were 2 for 2 on the power play   while the Waterdogs were 0 for 1.

Gary Groob has been involved with Lacrosse for the majority of his life, whether playing, coaching, or covering the sport for the media.

An avid fan, with a real drive about helping to “grow the game”, Gary became part of podcasts about the game in 2010. Through the podcasts, Mr. Groob was given an opportunity to write about lacrosse, and the rest as they say, is history.

In the year 2020, Mr. Groob was made the media person for the Arena Lacrosse League, voted onto the board of directors of the Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club, as well as being made administrator of the Lacrosse page “Global Lacrosse” with a membership of 9000 members in over 90 Countries. Gary was also made an administrator of Lacrosse History Past Present and Future in 2022.

Mr. Groob co-hosts a weekly Lacrosse show on Spanglish Sports World, and ZingoTV channel 250, as well as writes a weekly lacrosse column for La Portada Canada News (both in print, and online).

Gary also hosts a Lacrosse talk show and podcast for The Edge of Philly Sports Network, seen live Sunday nights at 9pm (ET), and archived on the Edge of Philly YouTube page, as well as Spotify.

Mr. Groob’s other sports interests include Hockey, Football, Boxing, Wrestling, and Baseball, competing competitively in Boxing and Wrestling for many years.
