Wings Home Welcome Party Turns Into a Blanket Party

The Albany FireWolves headed into South Philadelphia to face the Wings Saturday night and walked away with a 15-10 win.

The FireWolves are playing with house money right now. They are feeling good about themselves, coming off a huge win over the NLL champion Buffalo Bandits and now beating a Wings team that’s led by one of NLL’s top scorers in Mitch Jones. The Wings were missing two of their top components on offense Blaze Riorden and Holden Cattoni. The FireWolves played tough on defense causing several Wings turnovers.

The first quarter would open the floodgates with both offenses coming alive in a 3-3 tie. Then in the third quarter, Albany unleashed pain and punishment on the Wings, scoring 6 out of 7 goals. While it’s still really early in the season, the FireWolves are putting the NLL on notice.

The Alex Simmons and Ethan Walker Show

Ethan Walker would set the tone for the FireWolves, he would get the beat the one-on-one coverage from Alex Pace, and then he would have an open lane to score his goal. Sam Firth and Tye Kurtz would add markers as Albany jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

With back-to-back powerplay goals, Mitch Jones and Joe Resetarits would get things rolling for the Wings, making their best opportunities with the man advantage. Sam LeClair followed that up with 24 seconds left in the first to tie it 3-3.

The string of 5 straight goals by the Wings continued into the second quarter. Joe Resetarits and Taggart Clark helped the Wings jump out of a two-goal lead. Firth would strike again at the 4:55 mark to get Albany back within one.

Towards the end of the first half, he would again beat Alex Pace, this time from long range. Alex Simmons would get a nice transition goal as Albany tied up the game 6-6 at the half. Both Simmons and Walker would record 8 points, with 3 goals and 5 assists on the day.

Taite Cattoni and Joe Resetarits Get Things Going In The Second Half

The FireWolves opened the second half on a three-goal run off markers from Travis Longboat, Alex Simmons, and Nathan Grenon.

Joe Resetarits and Taite Cattoni would have some good team chemistry going. Resetarits found Cattoni with 5:47 on the clock to pull the Wings within two, 9-7.

Albany finished off the quarter with goals from Marshall Powless, Simmons and Grenon as the FireWolves held a 12-7 lead.

Kurtz and Walker continued their strong night to open the fourth as the FireWolves jumped out to a 13-7 lead. Mitch Jones would get on the board with 4:50 to play as the Wings tried to dig out of a hole. Seconds later, Nick Chaykowsky replied for Albany to make it 15-8.

Goals from Ben McIntosh on the power play and Cattoni in the dying seconds would round out the scoring to make the final 15-10.
